Sun rising in the
sky We love February, when the sun shines longer in a
bright blue sky! Following December’s growing darkness and January’s
attempt to regain brightness, February comes on strong with lighter,
longer days. The sun warms the earth, the air is crisp and clean and the
temperatures are unpredictable. The weather has been mild this winter; the
last big snow storm came in mid December. Since then the day time
temperatures have been well above freezing and we are looking at green and
open fields, but that can change overnight and our hikes in the parks will
require skis or snowshoes and flag football will turn to ice hockey. For
our friends who have a love of all things nautical, 18 "lakers" from 600
to 1000 feet in length are docked in the shipyard for the winter and they
are a sight to see all lined up.
On February 17&18 Sturgeon Bay will host a weekend of “Fire and Ice” with local artists sculpting figures from huge ice chunks during the day Saturday the 18th. That evening there will be dancing and dinner at Stone Harbor Resort with a 12-piece Latin orchestra and free salsa lessons. Take time to visit the Maritime Museum and The Miller and Fairfield Art Museums and Galleries. On Sunday, February 19, Popelka-Trenchard Glass Studio will have a hot glass demonstration. More on the weekend activities from Sturgeon Bay Visitor and Convention Bureau: 1-800-301-6695 or www.sturgeonbay.net
The Fish Creek Winter Festival will run Feb. 3 - 14 with winter games and good hot food: hot dogs, chili, cherries jubilee. There will be horse drawn sleigh rides, cherry pie eating contest, snow shoe dance contest and much more: A folk concert at the White Gull Inn Feb. 8 and The Second Annual Kites Fly over the Bay Feb. 11 & 12 with an opportunity to make a kite or bring one and fly it with world class kite fliers from around the country. For information on this call 920-868-2316. So come on up to Door County and join the fun! Rooms are ready at The White Lace Inn so call or make a reservation online. We’ll see you at breakfast in the Main House when you can enjoy some fruit filled French toast, a muffin and some good coffee. Then see what is going on in the county and return in late afternoon for a mug of our hot chocolate or tea and some of those yummy Chocolate chunk oatmeal cookies the Inn is famous for. You know you need a getaway so we’ll be looking for you. Visit the Dancing Bear Shop on 3rd Avenue while you are here - Michele and Sheri are excited about a new gift line called Gifts Outside the Box featuring unique, hand crafted delights. Then stop by the “Bear” February 18th to check out their ice sculpture as they participate in the 2006 Icescapes.
